Research and Integration

Artist2’s main objective is to set up a scientific community in the area of embedded systems. Our approach consists in gathering together clusters, which are teams, on essential topics in embedded systems design. The integration effort consists of strengthening coherency within the clusters (cluster integration activities), and integration between clusters (NoE Integration activities). Integration is driven by work around cutting-edge research activities, technical platforms, and dissemination / spreading excellence.

We aim to create a lasting structure that will continue to benefit the research community and industry well beyond the lifespan of the NoE financing. Each cluster should act as a single scientific team, carrying out the Joint Programme of Activities (JPA), as agreed. Each cluster has one or more scientific leaders, who lead the team and coordinate the effort.

The NoE clusters reflect the following elements from of the embedded systems design flow, which is composed of the following cooperating activities, starting with requirements capture and leading to implementation. These activities must be well coordinated, and supported by tools and methods to ensure satisfactory levels of productivity and quality.

Cluster: Real-Time Components

To express and validate system requirements, an abstract model of the system, representing the services provided, as well as system interaction with its environment, needs to be built. Given the complexity of the systems to be modelled, a methodology and its accompanying technology are required allowing reuse of existing components.

Cluster: Adaptive Real-Time
This is a more recent approach to embedded systems design, where temporal constraints can be relaxed, which allows optimized use of resources.

Cluster: Compilers and Timing Analysis

In modern microprocessor architectures caches and pipelines are key features for improving performance. Unfortunately, they make the analysis of the execution behaviour of instructions very difficult since this behaviour now depends on the execution history.

Cluster: Execution Platforms

Research in Execution Platforms targets the development of the theoretical and practical tools for modelling the dynamic behaviour of application software for a given platform.

Cluster: Control for Embedded Systems

Embedded systems are deployed in the real world, and are often reactive to it. This interaction with the environment is intrinsic to the service provided. The focus of the research in the Control for Embedded Systems cluster is implementation-related real-time issues for networked embedded control systems and control of real-time computing and communications systems.

Cluster: Testing and Verification

This is transversal topic, which interacts with all the other topics in embedded systems design. It aims to ensure that the different design steps meet given properties, as well as the overall correctness of the implementation. This is a very active research topic, with results at different levels of the design process.
