Adaptive solutions for the emerging reliability and multicore resource management challenges

Stylianos Mamagkakis

PhD Team Coordinator, Digital Components - Smart Systems and Energy Technology, IMEC vzw., Belgium.

Abstract

The revolutionary impact of the semiconductor industry lies in producing chips with ever increasing integration capability, computational capacity, and energy efficiency at decreasing cost per function. This integration has enabled the first wave of multicore hardware platforms, which have found their way in the embedded systems we use in our everyday life, as in advanced entertainment and communication systems. As technology scaling approaches nanoscale dimensions, we can expect this integration to move even further, thus increasing dramatically the number of cores on a chip and enabling the mapping of a higher number of software applications. The main challenges that arise are related with run-time resource management of shared multicore platform resources and variability and reliability issues which are linked with nanoscale technology. In this talk, the reliability and resource management challenges of these emerging multicore platforms will be discussed and the proposed adaptive solutions will be evaluated.
