Technical role(s) within ArtistDesign

As a part of the FP7 MERASA Project (www.merasa.org) we have designed a CMP architecture that allows co-hosting application with hard real-time constrains and applications without time constrains. The architecture provides predictability (time analyzability) for the hard real-time tasks and high-performance for the non critical tasks. We are further developing this architecture, and I think that we can get feedback from the cluster and activity members as well as show our experience in developing this architecture. Overall, I would like to collaborate with cluster members in the area of multithreaded architectures for embedded real-time systems.
Currently I am leading the FP7 project PROARTIS (see attached presentation for more details). I would like to received feedback and show my experience in this project as well. The strategy of PROARTIS is to introduce Architectural Design Principles that, by construction, result in temporal behaviour for which the hypothesis of statistical independence can be made (or a clear notion of dependence) and therefore enables probabilistic analysis. This is done by moving away from deterministic behaviours to more random behaviours.

Research interests

My main research area focuses on multithreaded architectures and the interaction between the Operating System and the processor architecture for both high-performance and real-time systems on which I am co-advising/has co-advised more than 10 PhD theses. In the real-time area, I focus on critical real-time embedded systems. My main area of interest is hardware architecture and the Operating system development for those types of systems.

Role in leading conferences/journals/etc in the area

So far I have been an active member of the Program committee of conferences on computer architecture as well as reviewer in many of them.
I have been reviewer of: (Real-Time System Symposium) RTSS, (International Symposium on Computer Architecture) ISCA, Euromicro Conference on Digital System Design (DSD), IEEE Transaction on Embedded and computing Systems
(TECS), IEEE Transactions on Computers (TC), ACM Transactions on Architecture and Code Optimization (TACO), Code Generation and Optimization (CGO), IEEE Computer Architecture Letters (CAL), High-Performance Computer Architecture (HPCA) …
I have been program committee of: Architecture of Computing Systems (ARCs), HPCA, IEEE International Parallel & Distributed Processing Symposium (IPDPS), Symposium On Applied Computing (SAC), International Conference on Very Large Scale Integration (VLSI-SoC) and the Computer Architecture and Operating System co-design (CAOS) Workshop.

Notable past projects

I have worked in industry projects with several processor vendor companies (Intel, IBM, Sun) as well as in FP6 (SARC) and FP7 Projects (MERASA, PROARTIS). I have led two industrial projects, one with IBM and one with Sun Microsystems, and I currently lead the BSC effort on the MERASA FP7 project. Currently, I am also the technical leader of the PROARTIS FP7 Project.
As a part of the HiPEAC Network of excellence (European Network of Excellence on High Performance and Embedded Architecture and Compilation) I worked in all tasks related to the use of multithreaded processors in hard-real time systems:
- Embedded multithreaded processors for hard and soft real-time systems
- Hard Real-time Scheduling Techniques for Embedded Multithreaded Multi-core Processors
- Investigation of real-time capable embedded SMT processor techniques

Awards / Decorations

I am the leader of the group on Interaction between the Operating System and the Computer Architecture at BSC.
I have been selected as one of the 100 Spanish ‘leaders of the future’ according to the May 2009 issue of the Capital Magazine. This issue seeks for the 100 young Spanish citizens that will most influence Spain’s future in all innovation areas. (www.capital.es).
